Folk Magic
Folk Magic is the broad family of practical magical traditions associated with peoples, cultures, and religions rather than formal schools alone. Unlike high magical theory, folk magic is remembered through local rites, inherited techniques, battlefield customs, and priestly or clan traditions.
The surviving notes below preserve known spell concepts and cultural associations. Some are clearly religious blessings, while others are racial techniques, battlefield rites, or magical practices tied to a specific people.
Human Traditions¶
Human folk magic varies widely by culture:
- Geallian, Illorian, Arteonian, Werhenlander, and Polaric practices are recorded as distinct human traditions.
- These traditions likely overlap with local religion, noble custom, military needs, and regional access to formal spellcraft.
Half-Elven and Halfling Traditions¶
Half-Elves preserve combat-oriented folk techniques:
- Enhanced Skills / Increased Offense / Visenhoi - a martial enhancement tradition.
- Blade Storm / Alu-Sarian - a health-damaging offensive technique.
Halflings are associated with Nimble Feet, a mobility rite that improves infantry speed and reflects their reputation for agility and field movement.
Water, Valley, and Gnomish Traditions¶
The Austropetolian technique Water Walker reflects high naval ability and the practical needs of island and coastal peoples.
Kinones traditions tied to Kino include Milon's Fury, associated with Miloni infantry combat ability, and Ancestor's Wisdom, a statesman-focused rite of finesse and judgment.
Gnomes preserve a technique simply recorded as Steal, associated with non-Jemskoo Gnomes and the taking of money from an opponent.
Dwarven Traditions¶
Dwarven folk magic is divided between the Copper Dwarves, Gold Dwarves, and Silver Dwarves:
- Golden Hands - associated with investment and Azari skill.
- Ancestor's Knowledge - adds finesse or charisma and is tied to Copper Dwarven ancestor traditions.
These practices fit broader dwarven reverence for founding pairs such as Htgarth, Ferja, Ava, Summsir, Frei, and Dwadais.
Elven Traditions¶
Elven folk magic differs sharply by lineage:
- Forest Recovery - limb healing associated with Deepwood Elves and the Forest Elves.
- Stinging Needles - a health attack associated with Thalmori Elves.
- Bloodlust - a Drow rite that grants high martial strength at the cost of other capacities.
- Na'athran's Blessing - a Sea Elf technique tied to Naathran and investment.
Orc, Goblin, and Dragkhan Traditions¶
Orcs are associated with Gotzon's Blessing, a zeal-granting rite tied to Guer and the discipline of the Inner Flame.
Goblins and Hobgoblins preserve an explosive Shoishoni technique capable of obliterating a province, echoing the destructive influence of Melodias.
Dragkhans preserve mounted and martial rites:
- Raging Dragon - speeds cavalry among western and eastern Dragkhans.
- Dragon's Claw - attacks an army and is associated with Sovenerian tradition.
Serpentine, Vampire, and Wraith Traditions¶
Snakefolk lodge traditions include:
- Hypnosis - robs a person and makes them favor the caster.
- Serpentine Scrying - adds army experience.
- Serpentine Swords - attacks an army.
Vampires are associated with Beastly Transformation, granting martial traits. Wraith folk practices are recorded but not yet detailed in current wiki sources.
Religious Folk Magic¶
Several folk rites are explicitly religious:
- Viktreic - increases morale.
- Zainudian - minor health healing.
- Helluvian - stability.
- Seeking the Way - a Seeker rite of innovation.
- Berserker Rage - a Norrfallae rite granting high martial ability at steep personal cost.
- Ancestor's Stars - a Stellaric rite adding charisma, finesse, or zeal.
- Enlightenment - an Ascendic rite associated with army tradition, innovation, or zeal.
