The Werhenlanders

Greater Werhen was once the easternmost province of the Zani Empire, producing many famous generals, statesmen, and inventors. Its people became known for independence, suspicion of outside rule, and refusal to remain unified for long.

History¶

The Great Rebellion of the Werhen attempted to throw off Zani rule. It ultimately failed, but the wounds inflicted by the Werhenlanders contributed to the empire's later weakness. After the Great Collapse, Werhen gained its first real taste of freedom.

In 698 LC, Werhenlanders declared independence as the Razani grip loosened in the east. In 707 LC, Werhenlander migrations into Intermarenica began. Later, Werhenlander invasions took over eastern Intermarenica, forcing the Razani to consolidate elsewhere.

Situation at 1000 LC¶

Werhenlander resistance has been worsened by meddling neighbors, especially the Razani Empire. Their potential strength is diluted by greed, suspicion, petty kings, shifting alliances, and defensive leagues designed to prevent any single ruler from becoming too powerful.

Facing hostile Illorians and Geallians to the south and east, and marauding Northlanders pillaging villages, the Werhenlanders have many challenges ahead.

Legacy¶

Werhen is one of the clearest examples of a former Zani province that survived imperial rule but could not easily turn independence into unity. Its people remain dangerous, inventive, and divided.
