Waal

203 words·1 min read

Waal is one of the two principal Gnomish languages. It is spoken mainly by the Mudskvas Gnomes, with distinct dialects among the Vdaami and Saav tribes.

Speakers and Homeland

The Gnomes of Horteon use Waal in the cultural world also known as Wuskouu. Their ancestors trace their origin to the Peaceful Valley, called Jaaltuvsk, before later migrations and divisions produced the Gnomish societies of Horteon and Polaria.

Waal exists beside Jaam, the other major Gnomish language. The two are related through shared Gnomish religion and history but are associated with different peoples and dialect networks.

Religious Vocabulary

The Kuulvaal faith provides one documented comparison between the languages. The creator god Wielkopan is called Wekuu in Waal and Wekuaa in Jaam. Gnomish religious life also recognizes the Taalvut, angels whose icons and pendants are used in everyday devotion.

Limits of the Record

The wiki does not currently describe Waal grammar, writing, or a larger vocabulary. Names and religious terms establish that it is a living language with multiple dialects, but they are not sufficient to reconstruct rules that the source material does not state.
