Zani Empire
The Empire of the Zani, also called the Geallian Empire or Zawalonnu Gealian in Imperial Zanic, was one of the largest and most influential empires in Omniluxian history. It succeeded the regional Eagelian Kingdom founded by Sumun the Great.
Zanis the Great founded the empire after executing a coup against the last Eagelian king, proclaiming himself King of the Eagelians, then Emperor of the Eagelians, and finally Emperor of the Geallians.
At its height, the Zani Empire stretched from Rohevia to western Werhen, ruling between 24 and 32 million people. Its subjects included humans, Dwarves, Elves, Dragkhans, and many other peoples. After the Great Split of 690 LC, it divided into the western Nazani Empire and eastern Razani Empire.
Founding¶
After Sumun's death, the Eagelian Kingdom declined under the Four Bad Kings. By the reign of Dbunnpun the Fat, the nobility and citizenry had lost patience. The kingdom survived mainly because its citizen-soldiers remained among the best-trained and most experienced soldiers in Eagelia.
Around 41 LC, records begin to mention the return of Zanis Zani. He used noble status and influence to become Marshal of the Royal Army, where he gained allies, won the loyalty of soldiers, and built experience fighting other Geallian tribes.
By 44 LC, Zanis had enough support in the court and army to move against Dbunnpun. The king's apathy made loyalists easy to sway. When the plot was discovered, Dbunnpun had no allies strong enough to resist, and Zanis executed him and declared himself King of the Eagelians.
Early Expansion¶
The Eagelian Kingdom was one member of the Geallian League, a loose alliance meant to defend against outside invaders. Gevanni was one of Eagelia's few allies, securing city autonomy within the growing realm.
Zanis used military strength, spies, and diplomacy to conquer or vassalize most Eagelian states along the Zonn River and northern Marenican coast by 46 LC. With much of the League distracted by wars against Ytalians, Intermarenicans, and Baetepians, the Eagelians subdued the Gunstris, Verne, Uzurne, Opunnen, and Zonstrise.
Zanis understood that foreign rule would be difficult for conquered peoples to accept. He began settling loyal Eagelian colonies in newly conquered territory, a policy that continued as the empire expanded beyond Eagelia.
Imperial Phases¶
The wiki's current source material preserves several major but unevenly documented imperial phases:
- War of the Three Emperors - an imperial conflict awaiting fuller article treatment.
- Pax Zanica - the long imperial order in which Zanic law, roads, legions, and culture spread across Luxterra and Morrigon. Magonis the Wise founded the first magic guild during this period.
- Crisis of the 6th Century - a period of instability before the Great Northern War.
- Great Northern War and the Incident - the Zani defeated the Northern Empire militarily, but Theolosius opened Melodias's Divine Well, causing The Incident.
- Great Division - the post-Incident split that produced the Nazani and Razani empires.
The Great Division¶
The Incident killed Emperor Zzunnon and his appointed heir, starting the Crisis of the 7th Century. O-Dzunn of the Razani branch was declared emperor in Durobaeste, while O-Bunn of the Nazani branch later declared himself emperor in Bharamuntacho Zani.
In 690 LC, the empire formally divided. Rozunse established the Razani line in the east after purging the Imperial Council, while Obsrubtu's marriage into the Nazani line supported the western Nazani claim. From this point, the Zani legacy became a contested inheritance rather than a single state.
Legions¶
The surviving legion list preserves the fate or later affiliation of many imperial formations:
- Legio I Wishtheon's Marchers - lost to Vetalians.
- Legio II Zanis - Razani.
- Legio III Baetepis - Razani.
- Legio IV Ytalia - Ytalia.
- Legio V Bhaxia - lost to Jarenam.
- Legio VI Dragkhan Slayer - lost to ancient Dragkhans.
- Legio VII Weagalia - Nazani.
- Legio VIII Wolf Slayer - Nazani, stationed in the Borderlands.
- Legio IX Orc Slayer - lost.
- Legio X Conquerer - Nazani.
- Legio XI Etaredica - lost.
- Legio XII Thunderbolt - Razani.
- Legio XIII Gate Protectors - Razani.
- Legio XIV Osezu - Razani.
- Legio XV Intermarenica - later status unclear in current sources.
- Legio XVI Werhenland - lost.
- Legio XVII Ran's Sons - Upper Baetep.
- Legio XVIII Karksm - Razani.
- Legio XIX Swamp Marchers - later status unclear in current sources.
- Legio XX Kaxia - later status unclear in current sources.
- Legio XXI Rohenevia - later status unclear in current sources.
- Legio XXII Vetalia - later status unclear in current sources.
Legacy¶
The Zani Empire gave the Geallians a pan-Geallian identity that later rulers could reshape into Zanic culture. Its calendar reforms, legionary model, imperial cult, roads, military colonies, and administrative titles persisted even after the empire broke.
The empire's legacy is claimed by several rival powers: the Nazani Empire, the Razani Empire, Ytalia, the Soventeir Empire, and the Zanisite cult that worships Zanis himself.
Visual History¶
The Visual History of the Zani Empire, 619-1001 LC provides a map-based overview of the empire's final centuries and successor states. It begins with the end of the Pax Zanica: the Zani campaigns in Srrorum, the sack of Saptabi, and the defeat at Hlivikkabi in 619-621 LC.
The video then follows the Great Northern War, the Incident, the Razani-Nazani split, and the unstable successor world of the late tenth and early eleventh centuries. Because the video is unlisted and has no captions, map labels and dates should be cross-referenced against the written Timeline and Sources.
