Zanis the Great

Zanis Zani "the Great" was an Eagelian statesman, general, philosopher, and conqueror who founded the Zani Empire. Born around 20 LC, he returned from semi-mythic travels in 41 LC, overthrew the last king of the Eagelian Kingdom in 44 LC, and transformed a divided Geallian world into the first imperial Zanic state.

Zanis ruled during the opening century of the Zanic Age. Later Zanisite tradition remembers him as the First Emperor, a demigod whose body was never found after his death in 97 LC. His enemies instead remembered him as the False God, the conqueror whose ambition broke old kingdoms, suppressed native faiths, and imposed Zanic rule across much of Luxterra and Morrigon.

Life¶

Return to Eagelia¶

The early life of Zanis is wrapped in legend. By 41 LC he had returned to Eagelia under the epithet "the Wanderer", after travels that later writers treated as either philosophical apprenticeship, divine preparation, or political exile. His return came during the decay of the Eagelian monarchy. After the death of Sumun the Great, the kingdom had passed through unstable and unpopular rulers until Dbunnpun the Fat became the last king.

Zanis used his noble status, military skill, and popular reputation to build support among the citizenry and the army. In 44 LC, at the age of 24, he led a coup against Dbunnpun, ended the old monarchy, and proclaimed himself Emperor of the Eagelians. The Eagelian Kingdom became the base from which he would expand into a wider Geallian empire.

Unifier of the Geallians¶

Zanis inherited a world of rival Geallian states, many loosely connected through the Geallian League. His first major objective was to bring those peoples under one crown. By 49 LC he had conquered or vassalized nearly all Geallians except the Ytalians, beginning the Zanic-Ytalian War.

The Ytalian campaign became one of the defining episodes of his reign. In 55 LC an assassination attempt by his own guards nearly killed him, but Cyrogelos the Loyal saved his life. Zanis elevated Cyrogelos to second command of the legions, and after the subjugation of Ytalia he rewarded him with the kingship of the Kingdom of Ytalia. In later Zanisite worship, Cyrogelos became Sol, the loyal companion who stood between the emperor and death.

Conquest of Luxterra¶

After securing the Geallians, Zanis pushed outward. In 51 LC he sent an army against Tiuban, capital of the Azari Golden Dwarves. The campaign became notorious for the Betrayal at Ruzel, when border states permitted Zanic forces to march through their lands, leaving the Azar unprepared. In 58 LC Zanis conquered the Baetep and placed the Sertem family over its administration. Baetepian loyalists smuggled away the Pomegranate Throne to the Old Kingdom of Dune rather than surrender it uncontested.

In 61 LC he vassalized the Phanician city-states and conquered the Azari Golden Dwarven kingdom, destroying the great ziggurat Etemenazari. By 65 LC he had conquered Weagelia, but the empire was already overextended. He responded with a policy that would become characteristic of Zanic imperial rule: founding Geallian colonies in conquered regions to secure loyalty, administration, and military control.

Intermarenica and the West¶

The First Zani-Intermarenican War began in 71 LC. By 75 LC Zanis controlled much of western Intermarenica, and by 86 LC, after a second war, most of southern Intermarenica had also fallen. In 89 LC he sent his son Unnopun Zani to conquer Bhanmrexcthem. Two years later Zanis oversaw the settlement of Geallians there, then withdrew from direct rule and settled on a farm in Bhanmrexcthem.

His retirement did not erase his influence. The institutions, colonies, court language, and dynastic claims he created continued to shape the Imperial Zanic world for centuries. Later Zani emperors, the Razani Empire, the Nazani Empire, and even rival claimants measured their legitimacy against his memory.

Calendar reform¶

Zanis also altered the Luxterran Calendar in 79 LC by adding two months. The first, Zanisolizan, bore his own name; the second, Cyrolizan, honored Cyrogelos. Later chroniclers treated the reform as a perfect emblem of Zanis's ambition: even time itself was made to march in imperial order.

Death and disappearance¶

Zanis died in 97 LC at the age of 77. His body was never found. Zanisite tradition teaches that he ascended to demigodhood, while skeptical historians read the missing body as one more legend gathered around an emperor whose life had already become impossible to separate from imperial myth.

Legacy¶

Zanis's immediate legacy was the creation of the Zani Empire, one of the largest and most influential states in Omniluxian history. He united the Geallians, broke or subordinated older regional powers, reorganized conquered lands around colonies and loyal governors, and established the model of Zanic universal rule.

His religious legacy became the Cult of Zanis, where he was worshipped as the First Emperor alongside companions and older Geallian gods. Cyrogelos became Sol, while the wider pantheon preserved figures such as Mina, Lupegen, Wishtheon, Sumun, and other divinized or adopted powers. The cult remained the religious backbone of the eastern Zani successor states even as Helluvianism spread through former imperial lands.

His political legacy was more contested. Zanic rulers praised him as the source of imperial law, military discipline, and civilization. Baetepians, Helluvians, rebellious provinces, and later reformers remembered him as the origin of conquest, persecution, and unchecked imperial power. Zorgolis of Gevanni would later describe the Razani emperors as heirs to a beast Zanis had unleashed, showing how deeply his name remained tied to debates over law, authority, and tyranny.

Artifacts and traditions associated with him also survived. The Imperial Zani Regalia symbolized manpower, learning, and civilization; the reputed Ashes of Zanis were treated as a defensive relic despite the tradition that his body vanished; and the Tales from the Zanic Age preserved popular memory of the world he created.
