Zanisite (The Cult of Zanis)

323 words·1 min read

The Cult of Zanis is the imperial state religion of the Zani successor states, deifying the legendary founder of the empire alongside a pantheon of his companions and older Geallian gods.

Zanis the First Emperor

Zanis was an Eageli-Zani general, conqueror, and founder of the imperial order. It is said he looked to the horizon and asked why it did not belong to him, then claimed that very horizon by right of conquest. Worshipped as the False God by his enemies and as a divine first emperor by the faithful, his cult remains the religious backbone of the Razani and their vassals.

The mystery of Zanis's death is central to the faith. His body was never found after his death in 97 LC, allowing Zanisite teaching to present his disappearance as an ascent to demigodhood. Relics such as the reputed Ashes of Zanis and the Imperial Zani Regalia were preserved as political and religious symbols even while rival traditions denied his divinity.

The Pantheon

  • Sol (Cyrogelos) - the Ytali general who defended Zanis against a mutiny and founded the loyal Kingdom of Ytalia.
  • Mina (Minerva) - goddess of wisdom and tactics, said to have blessed Zanis before his battle against the Baetepi.
  • Lupegen (Mercurio) - the primordial wolf-god of pre-Geallian belief, adopted into the pantheon by the incoming Geallians.
  • Wishtheon (Ceresia) - one of the Four Great Gods, remembered in Zani tradition as a western divine power who urged Zanis toward his sealed Well.
  • Sumun - founder of the Eagelian Kingdom and adopter of the Luxterran Calendar, later incorporated into Zanisite sacred memory.

Decline

The cult's authority is challenged everywhere by the rise of Helluvianism, which erodes the religious unity that once bound the empire together.
