Gevanni

232 words·1 min read

Gevanni is an autonomous Geallian city of the Zani and later Razani imperial world. It is best known as the birthplace and deathplace of Zorgolis of Gevanni, the condemned senator and author of Tales from the Zanic Age.

Government

Gevanni is officially governed by the Gevanni Senate, a council of elected noblemen and freemen. In theory, this makes the city one of the more civic and self-governing communities of the old imperial order.

In practice, the city and province are ruled by the Zanic governor, whose authority comes from imperial appointment. Under the Razani Empire, the senate often serves as little more than a ceremonial stamp on the governor's laws.

Social Conflict

The gap between formal autonomy and real autocracy defines Gevanni's politics. Foreign Eagelian nobility and the governor's office dominate local institutions, while citizens and senators preserve the memory of older civic rights.

Zorgolis attempted to rally the people against this arrangement. His outspoken criticism led to his execution, which in turn sparked riots and fires in the Razani capital. Gevanni therefore represents the civic strain inside the Zani successor world: an imperial city whose own institutions expose the empire's contradictions.
