Northern Empire
The Northern Empire, also called the United Northern Empire in the timeline, was the northern great power defeated by the Zani Empire during the Great Northern War. Its final capital was Petramonis, where the catastrophe later known as the Incident began.
Formation and Rivalry¶
The Northern Kingdoms of the Nortii formed the United Northern Empire in 363 LC. By 370 LC, the new empire was strong enough to seize minor lands from the Zani Empire, establishing the rivalry that would eventually become the Great Northern War.
For centuries the Northern Empire endured as the great counterweight to Zani power in the north. Its exact institutions are only lightly preserved in current wiki sources, but the timeline remembers multiple capitals and a powerful magical establishment.
Fall in the Great Northern War¶
In 660 LC, Zani forces captured the first capital of the United Northern Empire. By 662 LC, the Zani had conquered the second capital despite calls for peace. The empire retreated toward Petramonis, its final capital.
The siege of Petramonis began in 668 LC. Facing defeat, the last archmage, Theolosius the Mad, attempted to use the sealed Primordial Well of Melodias against the invading armies.
The Incident¶
In 670 LC, Theolosius opened Melodias's prison. The release destroyed Petramonis and the empire's heartlands in a vast magical explosion, split Omniluxia, darkened the climate, and triggered widespread famine, storms, tsunamis, and magical upheaval.
Survivors fled north toward Polaria, but the Northern Empire's achievements and political institutions were largely forgotten within a few generations. Its final act, however, reshaped the entire world.
