Renos Nazani

721 words·3 min read

Renos Nazani is a Nazani prince, general, and commander of the Gonessionem VII "Weagalia." Celebrated by his veterans as the man who restored imperial arms after Telamon, he is the most dangerous military figure in the Nazani Empire and the chief rival of his cousin Martios I Nazani.

House of Nazani

Renos belongs to the imperial House of Nazani, but his authority was built in the army rather than at court. He is a cousin of Martios, close enough to the Purple Throne for his ambition to matter and far enough from lawful succession for his supporters to speak in the language of merit, destiny, and military necessity.

Among soldiers, Renos represents the old martial promise of the Western Empire: that the Nazani can still recover what was lost to Marshlanders, Borderlanders, and southern rivals. Among courtiers, he represents the nightmare that a victorious general might decide popularity is a better title than legality.

Commander of Weagalia

In 991 LC, the Nazani war effort was reeling. Embarrassing setbacks during the siege of Telamon were followed by a catastrophic defeat at the Battle of Telamon, exposing the failures of the imperial command. Emperor Aleksios VI Nazani responded by empowering Renos to assume total control of the army.

Renos took command of the Gonessionem VII "Weagalia" and transformed panic into momentum. He tightened discipline, rewarded veterans, and led the legion through a series of victories that reversed many of the losses the Nazani had suffered during the previous three decades. His reputation grew with each recovered position, until soldiers began to speak of him less as a commander and more as the empire's deliverer.

Betrayal at Peace

Renos's triumph was cut short in 994 LC. Aleksios VI died at the age of sixty-five under mysterious circumstances, and Martios ascended as emperor. One of Martios's first acts was to sign the Treaty of Telamon, ending the war with the Marshlanders.

To Renos, the treaty was not prudence but betrayal. He and his veterans believed the empire had paid in blood to regain the initiative, only for Martios to surrender at the negotiating table. The Treaty of Telamon therefore became the wound around which Renos's faction formed: a shared memory of victories spent for nothing, and a belief that the Purple Throne had passed to a ruler unworthy of the men defending it.

Character and Legacy

Renos is charismatic, disciplined, proud, and dangerously certain of his own judgment. He inspires loyalty by sharing hardship with his soldiers and by remembering the names of men that court officials treat as numbers in a levy list. In council he is blunt, impatient, and contemptuous of compromise that smells like fear.

His admirers praise him as the sword the Nazani Empire needs: decisive, courageous, and touched by the old fire of Zani conquest. His enemies see the same qualities and call them vanity. Renos does not easily forgive humiliation, and the Treaty of Telamon taught him that the empire's greatest enemy might be weakness inside its own palace.

Family

Renos is a cousin of Martios I Nazani and a prince of the House of Nazani, the western imperial family descended from the old Zani inheritance. Like the eastern Razani, the Nazani claim continuity from the shattered Zani Empire, but Renos's political identity is shaped less by court genealogy than by the soldiers who see him as the house's living sword.

His claim is informal. Renos is not the lawful emperor, and his supporters do not rest their hopes on clean succession law. They point instead to his blood, his victories after Telamon, and the belief that the dynasty's right to rule means little if it cannot defend the empire.

That makes him harder to dismiss than an ordinary noble rebel. He is close enough to Martios for his ambition to sound dynastic, popular enough for his discontent to become military politics, and distant enough from the throne for every slight to become proof that the court fears him. The family quarrel therefore divides the House of Nazani between legality and force, palace continuity and battlefield legitimacy.
