Esquelians

The Esquelians are distant relatives of the Celticans, Rohenoans, Vetalians, and Borderlanders. Their political culture preserves older tribal assemblies, but centuries of Zanic influence pushed many communities toward hereditary rule and more autocratic chiefs.

Political Tradition¶

Esquelian communities traditionally elected chieftains as military leaders rather than civic rulers. Authority depended on public persuasion, personal reputation, and the ability to defend oneself before the tribe.

The central ritual of that older system was the Rezishus, which tested whether a leader could defend himself orally as well as militarily. It rewarded quick thinking, rhetoric, and public accountability.

Zanic Influence¶

Under Zanic influence, Esquelian chiefs began seeking broader authority and turning their offices into hereditary positions. The Rezishus survived, but its meaning changed. Instead of a real test of leadership, it became a managed performance where supporters raised simple criticisms that the chief could defeat with elaborate language.

Despite this decline, mock Rezishus training remained popular. Geallians even adopted parts of the practice, despite opposition from traditional Geallian orators.

Later History¶

The Esquelians were deeply affected by Jarenam's revolt. In 977 LC, Jarenam's armies pushed back both the Razani and loyal Esquelians, and Esquelians were driven from their coastal homeland into Etaredican lands. In 924 LC, before Jarenam's rise, Esquelians had also joined revolts against Zaraken rule with Razani support.

Their history therefore sits between tribal autonomy, Zanic political imitation, and the violence of later imperial collapse.
