Magical Development Rankings
The Magical Development Ranking is a system used by the Chroniclers to compare the magical development of each species around 1000 LC. It measures not only raw power, but education, innovation, institutions, and the number of practicing mages.
Criteria¶
Each race is judged in four categories, each ranked from 1 to 5:
- Quality of Education
- Innovation
- Quantity of Domestic Schools
- Quantity of Mages
The scale is:
- 5 - exceptional education, most innovative, large selection of schools, large quantity of mages.
- 4 - decent education, innovative, multiple schools, decent quantity of mages.
- 3 - basic education, up to date, one or two major schools, small quantity of mages.
- 2 - restricted curriculum, behind, reliant on foreign schools, few folk mages.
- 1 - no education, backward, no schooling, no mages.
Domestic Style Bonus¶
Each species receives an additional 0.5 if it independently developed a domestic style or technique of its own. This matters because a small people with a unique tradition may be more developed than its number of schools alone suggests.
Levels¶
- Level 4: 16-20 - most developed and prestigious.
- Level 3: 11-15 - decently developed with prominent mages.
- Level 2: 6-10 - magic restricted to a scarce few.
- Level 1: 0-5 - undeveloped, possibly not magical.
Use¶
These rankings are a comparative tool, not an absolute moral or cultural hierarchy. They should be read beside Magic, Magic Styles, Magonis the Wise, and the histories of magical bans after the Great Collapse.
